Unfortunately most weight loss diets are actually fad diets. All to often diets that describe themselves as being new or revolutionary are actually diets that are twenty or thirty years old come back for a second or third wave of popularity. Good examples are the Zen diet, which is simply a revival of hippie macrobiotic eating theories from the mid 1960s, the Zone diet which is based on food combining principles that have been around since the turn of the 19th century and the Atkins diet which was initially pioneered in the 1970s and had a Gloria Swanson type comeback not too long ago.

The best way to identify a fad diet is to determine if it is based on any of the following principles:

It is based on the way Neanderthals eat
It is based on foods from the bible
It is based on your blood type
It is based on eating mostly protein and no carbs
It is based on eating mostly carbs and no protein
It is based on eating no fat
It is based on eating fatty foods
It recommends the eating of negative calorie foods
It recommends eating only one fruit such as grapefruit
It recommends drinking more than three cups of coffee a day
It claims that you can eat whatever you want

Perhaps the most popular of these diets are the High protein/low carb diet that are based on the idea that carbohydrates are bad, that many people are “allergic” to them or are insulin-resistant, and therefore gain weight when they eat them. This includes the South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet and the Atkins diet. These types of diets induce ketosis to accelerate weight loss. Ketosis is an abnormal body process that occurs during starvation due to lack of carbohydrate. Ketosis causes fatigue, constipation, nausea, and vomiting, none of which are part of a healthy lifestyle. Long-term side effects of ketosis are documented to include heart disease, bone loss, and kidney damage

The truth behind weight gain in this society is that people are eating more total calories and getting less physical activity. Your body simply doesn’t distinguish between types of calories when it comes to weight gain or loss only the number of them.

Crash diets dehydrate you, low calorie diets put your body into starvation mode so you plateau so you can’t lose one more pound and high protein diets stress your kidneys and clog your arteries.

The truth is that you do need protein and fat in the diet, both serve important metabolic and physiological roles in the body. Fad and crash diets, such as the ones described above are not only unhealthy but they are also cause rebound weight gain. Also most diets, even though diet gurus write them cause an initial weight loss but the ultimate result is that you gain all of the weight back the minute you go off the plan. If you don’t gain it back within a couple of diets, you are likely to gain it all back plus a bit more within a year.

Snoring isn’t generally a problem for the person making the noise unless a medical condition is causing the issue or sleep is actually lost as a result. But for those who live with a person who snores, sleep can be impossible to obtain. If snoring is a major issue for the person who does it or the person or people who live with it, it’s time to start exploring snoring treatment options. These options can range from simple sleep position adjustments to major surgery.

Before panicking that surgery is the only option, it’s a good idea to examine the situation. Ask yourself how long the condition has been present? Is it due to an ongoing cold or other minor illness that has impaired ability to breath at night? If snoring has been a long-term problem, outside help might be in order. If it’s due to a cold or it’s a relatively new condition, over the counter treatments or even a change of sleep positions can help.

If snoring is a fairly new nighttime prospect, it may be that you’ve changed your sleeping position lately. Sleeping on the back tends to promote snoring, so try your side or stomach. For pregnant women this may be impossible, but like all the other inconveniences of pregnancy, this too will pass.

Other primary causes of snoring include:

* Weight. If you’re overweight, even slightly, this can create issues with nighttime airflow. Losing as little as a few pounds might help lessen the snoring bouts.

* Stay away from alcohol at night. This has been shown to increase incidents of snoring.

* Stay away from sedatives and other drugs that cause drowsiness. They have been shown to relax throat muscles to the point they increase airway obstructions that can relate to snoring.

* Sinus infections, colds and so on. Temporary illnesses can increase a person’s propensity to snore. Generally the snoring will pass along with the illness.

If a cold or weight don’t seem to be the cause of snoring, more investigation may be required. There are a number of over the counter items such as nose strips, breathing masks and even saline nose spray that may help. But, if the cause is unclear and lost sleep is becoming a problem or interfering with the quality of life, a doctor’s visit is likely in order.

Medical treatments for snoring can be pretty basic or fairly complex. On the upside, generally more than 90 percent of those with a sleep apnea related condition can be treated without using an invasive technique. If surgery is called for to help fix the problem, it can be meant to address a number of different conditions. Some common issues that cause snoring include a need to remove or shrink soft tissue at the back of the throat, a need for the tonsils or adenoids to come out and even sinus or septum issues.

Snoring isn’t a real problem unless it interferes with sleep – yours or someone else’s. If this is the case, a solid snoring treatment may be the only option. There’s no need to go through life with inadequate sleep if help is available.

Boosting your metabolism requires faith, self-discipline and a willingness to change. This is because most slow metabolisms are the result of years of bad habits and a reluctance to adopt a healthier life style.

There is no one magic bullet or pill that will automatically boost your metabolism. It takes a slow, steady dedication to following through on each of the following top ten ways to boost your metabolism.

1. Train With Weights – Aerobic exercise is good for you but it is the anaerobic exercise that involves the lifting of weights that is going to transform fatty tissue into fat burning muscle.
This is because muscle tissue is metabolically active tissue. This means that it burns calories even while you are at rest. Thus it stands to reason that the more muscle you have the more calories your body is going to burn.

2. Participate in High Intensity Aerobics – Whenever you perform an aerobic activity such as swimming, dancing or cycling and perform it with the intention of raising your heart rate your body experiences an oxygen deficit.
This causes your metabolism to go into overdrive and eliminate toxins and wastes quickly from your system.

3. Don’t Avoid All Fats – Stay away from saturated fats and eat fats that are rich in omega 3 and omega 6 oils.
Depriving yourself of all fats will cause your metabolism to slow down as your body begins to believe it is starving and goes into fat conservation mode. This makes it difficult for fat cells to be transferred to the bloodstream where they can be used for fueling the muscles.

4. Eat Several Small Meals a Day – Whenever your body is busy digesting, your metabolic rate is raised. Snacking on healthy foods several times a day keeps your metabolism elevated and working efficiently.

5. Stay Away From Refined Foods – The harder your body has to work to process a food, the more your metabolism in raised.
Refined foods are in a sense already partly digested and speed sugars and fats directly into your blood stream. This lowers the metabolism. Whole foods, especially if they are raw, take longer to digest.

6. Eat Low Glycemic Carbohydrates – Low glycemic carbohydrates are ones that take the body longer to metabolize. These include fibrous, slow to digest vegetables such as celery and broccoli and all of the beans in the legume family.

7. Vary Your Overall Calorie Intake – The more you disturb your body’s metabolism by refusing to let it settle in an overall routine the more your metabolism will speed up. Don’t make it your goal to eat exactly 1200 calories a day. Eat 900 one day and 1600 the next.

8. Eat More Protein – Make at least 30% of your daily diet protein. If you do this then your body will utilize 30% of your total caloric intake for the day just to digest the protein.

9. Drink Ice Cold Water – The colder the water is that you drink, the more your body will have to expend calories to raise it to your body temperature. This helps increase your metabolism.

10. Take the Stairs! – Taking the stairs and not the elevator can help boost your metabolism. The same goes for choosing to bike to work rather than driving and parking far away from the store in the mall parking lot.

Remember that when it comes to boosting your metabolism every little bit of extra energy expenditure counts even though it does not seem like much at the time!

Hoodia is considered to be so safe for human consumption that it is actually classified as a food and not a drug or herbal supplement by the government of South Africa. This of course is from a government that knows that the plant has been consumed by the populations of famine stricken regions to stave off hunger. Also studies of malnourished African children have shown that eating only hoodia for three months causes death. However perhaps this is true of malnourished individuals who consume nothing but bananas or bacon for three months as well.

Perhaps the greatest safety hazard to your health is losing too much weight too fast. It is not uncommon for individuals to lose as much as five pounds a week with daily hoodia supplementation. However rapid weight loss is in itself very stressful on the heart, muscles, nerves and brain. You are best advised to only take the amount of Hoodia you need to lose two to three pounds a week so that you don’t develop health problems. Another reason this is wise is because losing any more than two pounds a week may not result in permanent weight loss.

Just as is true with staying on a calorie restricted diet for too long, your body may reach a plateau and refuse to drop any more pounds if you take too much of the supplement. This is because the body will go into conservation mode and begin to retain fat. This is simply Mother Nature’s way of responding to what it perceives to be as a famine condition. As taking hoodia every day can result in a shortfall of 1000 calories a day you can see why the body would revert to this condition.

Hoodia also takes away your urge to drink liquids and you are simply not triggered by thirst as often as you normally would. The problem with this is that your body will not prompt you naturally to drink enough water. Drinking eight glasses of water a day is challenging for most people but it is even more challenging when you are on Hoodia. However as the restricted calorie intake caused by the ingestion of Hoodia might trigger an internal detoxification process it is absolutely essential that you drink as much water as you can while taking hoodia so that toxins and waste products are easily passed out of your system.

There is also some debate about whether or not taking hoodia is a good idea for diabetics or pre diabetics. As hoodia sends a message to the brain that there is ten times as much glucose as sugar present in the blood (thus there being no need to eat) there could be an effect on the pancreas. It is not clear whether or not hoodia can cause blood glucose spikes in diabetic individuals or not. This is because Hoodia is a relatively newer supplement that has not been packaged by the large pharmaceutical companies. This means that little or no research has actually been done on the long-term effects of having your brain consistently detect high levels of blood glucose.

As with all herbal and botanical supplements it is always best to be cautious and consume Hoodia with moderation and stop taking it if you do notice any side effects at all.

U.S. auto manufacturers are facing more pressure from import manufacturers every year. They have already been feeling the heat from Nissan, Toyota and Honda, but now with Hyundai taking a larger chunk of the middle and lower range cars, SUV’s and trucks this may be the start of the end of the likes of Ford and G.M.

Ford has already announced a restructuring and a projected cut of 30,000+ jobs. G.M. has recently retired an old name brand Oldsmobile and is posting losses on a regular basis. Delphi Corp., the largest auto parts supplier for U.S. manufacturers has already declared bankruptcy which makes buyers leary of future parts availability. Most of the other parts suppliers are very close to or are currently declaring bankruptcy.

In the 80’s when Chrysler was having severe finacial woes the government stepped in with million dollar loans and other aid. The government is currently reeling from Katrina, New Orleans, and the war in Iraq. It can’t afford to bail out Ford or G.M. The public opinion is against a government bailout as the economy is not its best. George Bush has too many other problems to deal with like high gas prices, natural gas, Iraq, etc…

So, without a government bailout and no proposed new laws to halt the outsourcing and outflowing of jobs and such to overseas giants like China and Japan, it is only a matter of time before Ford and G.M. go bankrupt. Toyota and Honda have been gunning for the number 1 spot and now that they have it are not going to give it up. The only hope left is with the trucks. Both Ford and G.M. have a bustling truck business and it is their only profitable business. The imports have tried to break into this market and after quite a few years they have not had much success. The majority of trucks are bought by die hard Ford or Chevy people. But, that may also change. Toyota has found that the key may be in Nascar. This could and will lead to other imports getting involved and taking the American out of Nascar. That would eventually happen as they have more money and lower costs.

Basically, with the laws the way they are right now, the U.S. auto manufacturers do not stand a chance. So the question is do we restrain trade with countries like China and Japan, possibly hurt foreign relations, Make it more expensive to buy better built and higher quality imports, etc… Or let democracy, free trade, and a capitalist society have its way giving Americans the best, safest vehicles, for the lowest price? Regardless of how we make our laws, Walmarts or their equivalents will always prevail – the basic premise of Walmart’s founder Sam Walton was to sell the best products to consumers at the lowest price possible. Look at what he did. In a period of 40 years he went from one store to being the largest retailer in the world. Walmart has plans for 2500 stores in China. Maybe the U.S. auto manufacturers could learn something here. Take the imports on at their own game, stop paying multi-million dollar compensation packages to executives that aren’t fixing the company. Maybe they need to pay more attention to what brings the best results in advertising at the least expense. Why is it that some companies must spend millions on advertising and others in the same niche get more results for much less?

Ford and G.M. need to rethink and come out with an attack plan. Go after the imports at their own level. Maybe make a marketing ploy of America and what we may lose. The kids of today aren’t growing up dreaming of Shelby Mustangs and Corvettes. They are driving Honda and Toyotas that they fix up like in the Movie The Fast and the Furious. Maybe its too late.
