Starting Your Own Home Business – How To Make The Dream A Reality

Working from home is a dream for many – but actually going ahead and starting a home business is very difficult. So what makes so many people want to do it, and why would you ever try such a crazy thing? Here are some common reasons, and some things to consider.

Easily Build Your Great Idea.

It suddenly hit you like a bolt of lightning: you’ve thought of a great business idea. This is perhaps the number one reason that people go into business from home: they’ve come up with something great that they really believe in, but can’t afford to rent any business premises. It does depend on what the business is, but working from home is often ideal in these situations.

Remember, though, that even the best ideas take hard work to become a reality. The kind of ideas that are good for a home-based business are ones that can become at least partly real quickly, and start bringing in an income – you shouldn’t sit at home for a year working on something that’s making you nothing whatsoever.

Making Your Hobby a Job.

Most people have something that they’re really passionate about, and would spend the rest of their life doing if they could, just for the enjoyment of it. Getting paid for doing what you love is obviously appealing – even if you only earn a living wage, it’d be your idea of paradise.

Make sure, though, that you’d be able to take it if you had to make a living from your passion. It’s the things we’re closest to that hurt us the most – think of how you might feel if no-one buys what you’ve made, or if they send it back and with a note saying “what rubbish, I demand a refund!” Can you cope with your hobby becoming commercial?

Tired of Your Boss?

It seems like everyone hates their boss. They try to pretend like they’re your friend, but they’re not fooling anyone, are they? You’re forced to work to pointless deadlines and targets. Anytime you spot a better way of doing something you’re
told that it’s impractical, or, worse, that it’s great but the stupid way of doing things is already ‘established’ and ‘policy’.

What you might not realize is that ‘being your own boss’ requires quite a lot of willpower. If there was no-one to make you get up in the morning and do any work, would you? Your home is supposed to be a place of rest and entertainment – and when it’s full of the equipment and temptation to do anything but work, working there can be hard.

Spending More Time with Your Family.

You feel like all you do is go to work, come home, and then sit around, too tired to do anything fun with your family. If you have children, they seem to be growing up so fast, and you’re missing it all – all because you have to go out and work.

Of course, the flip side here is that you might just end up spending too much time with your family, while you’re trying to work. When everyone knows you’ll be in the house all day, they’ll probably ask you to do all sorts of unimportant things, just because you’re available. It’s hard to say no, and before you know it, you’re doing the job of a full-time ‘housewife’ instead of what you set out to do.

You Don’t Like Wasting Time and Money Commuting.

After all, once you get to the office, what is there anyway? Offices are dreary environments, and terrible to work in – travelling for hours there and back and spending a significant proportion of your wages to do it seems completely pointless (especially if you live in the middle of nowhere). If you could work from home, think of the time you’d save… and time is money, isn’t it?

Don’t be surprised, however, if you start to feel trapped in your home, since you never leave it. Can you find good ways to get away from it all?

But Don’t Be Put Off.

While the list of warnings for working at home might look long, a list of warnings about working in an office would surely be longer. As long as you stay on your guard, you can get all the benefits of working from home without falling into any of the traps.

Regardless of what type of internet business you plan to start, the process is the same. Once you’ve set up your business, there are some steps that you can eliminate, like your start up. However, if you follow the other steps repeatedly, you can generate mulitiple streams of income, which will increase your profits.

1. Set Up Your New Business
When you first decide to start your business online, there are several things you need to do.

First, you need to choose an accounting system and open a bank account. You need to keep your money for your business separate from your personal accounts for purposes of accountability.

You can choose either a single entry or double entry accounting program. If you live in the US, single entry is recommended.

2. Choose Your Product
The products or services you choose to market on the internet will depend on what your interests are, how much money you have to get started, and whether or not there is a market for what you want to sell.

You can choose to create your own product, join an MLM, promote affiliate products, or offer your services.

3. Write Your Unique Selling Proposition
You want to make your business different from your competitors. The easiest way to do this is to decide what makes your business different.

When writing your USP, decide who your ideal customer is, how your product will benefit that customer, and what makes your product better than your competitors.

If you understand these things, you’ll have a stronger focus in your business, and you’re more likely to make the sale because you’ll focus your energies where your actual market is.

4. Build a Website
Once you’ve taken the first three steps, it’s time to build a website.

Do your keyword research. Focus on keywords that are popular but don’t have a lot of competition.

You can build either a direct response site or a content site.

With a direct response site, you’ll basically build a website that’s a sales letter.

A content site will be more varied. You can include news, product reviews, articles, a FAQ, and interactive elements like a forum or discussion group.

The possibilities with this type of site are endless. Since the internet is an information driven media, you’re more likely to find success with a site that is tightly targeted to a niche, with lots of content and interactivity.

5. Write Your Marketing Plan
Once you’ve built your website, it’s time to decide how you want to market your new site.

During this stage, you’ll gather your marketing tools, as well as decide what methods you use.

Examples of ways to market your website are: press releases, writing articles, posting on forums, posting to safelists, etc.

Once you’ve decided how you want to market, bookmark those sites where you will market.

6. Promote your new business
Once you’ve written your marketing plan, you’ll need to write your promotional materials and then send them out.

Testing and tracking are key here to see how your marketing is doing.

This way, you can make adjustments and discard marketing methods that don’t work for you.

Consistency is also important, and you’ll need to market on a regular basis.

7. Maintain your new business
Once you’ve completed the first six steps, you’ll want to apply the 60/30/10 rule of maintaining your new business.

If you sell products, sixty percent of your time will be spent marketing. Thirty percent will be spent on product development, and ten percent will be spent doing administrative tasks like answering email and keeping your business records.

If you sell services, you’ll spend sixty percent of your time doing your service and thirty percent of your time marketing.

Keep in mind that regardless of whether you sell products or services, marketing is an integral part of your success.

Once you’ve created a successful business, then repeat the steps. You’ll see more success for years to come.

How do you cope with the ‘millions’ of tasks when running a Micro or Home based business (HBB), especially if you work on your own (or maybe have occasional assistance) and still have time for yourself and/or your family?

How do you know which tasks are important and which are urgent – or do you run your business by the seat of your pants, along the line of ‘it is URGENT’ all the time?

One way to overcome the problems you are facing is to draw on the experience of other successful Micro and HBB, then you will not have to go through the same pain and stress that they did.

I struggled with this problem, but discovered a solution which I have been sharing with Micro and HBB operators for the last 10 years. Government has even invited me to sit on committees to help them understand the problems all Micro/HBB businesses have to tackle.

The struggle we face when ‘we are our business’ means we have to make our product (or deliver our services); complete the filing; answer the phone; do our marketing; conduct research; keep our records up to date; develop our website; communicate with our clients etc. etc., and often we are not sure if we are doing it correctly or not. Well, there is a way to get it ‘right’ from the start and to ensure you remain on track.

The solution is simple, but initially you do have to trust others and approach business with the philosophy of ‘what can I do for you’. The solution is this:- tap into the skills and expertise of other business operators to guide and advise you, based on their experience. Then you will learn how to handle both the important and the urgent tasks and you won’t just save time by reducing your effort – you will also reduce stress and eliminate much of the risk in running your business.

Find a mentor or a group of business operators prepared to form an advisory panel for you and your business. It is not as hard as you think – people like to help newcomers and those struggling. If you are too unsure of yourself at first – join a good Internet Forum where experts will respond to your questions and help you solve problems online.

Remember – if you don’t take advantage of what others are prepared to share with you, you will continue to put in a massive effort with possible mediocre results; the stress level of your day to day activities will not alter; the current risk level of your business failing, will remain high; you will continue to struggle to fit everything into your limited time and your business will control your life – instead of you controlling it!

Recently, the most effective and best way to work is at home. Constant noise, the phone rings and even coworkers from the office can be distracting and it disturbs a lot of people who are concentrating on their work. While your own home can be filled with distractions, you can always create a working space where you can be left alone.

However, there are certain things to be done in order for you to be successful in starting up your own home-based business.

Here are some of the many rules that you need to follow in order for your home-based business to be successful.
