Scientific evidence of the health risks posed by smoking go back to the 1950s. Figures from the US government show that 28% of males 18 years old and above and 23% of females in the same age bracket were into the habit in the mid-1990s. The percentages were even higher in 1964, when the US surgeon general first issued an official warning that smoking was hazardous to one’s health.

Following that formal warning, many reports were released on the link between cigarettes and tobacco to heart diseases, lung diseases, and cancers of the mouth and other tissues. However, the habit persisted, with young smokers doing so as an expression of rebellion and strong drive to be independent.

For adults, smoking marked an addiction to nicotine – the key factor that made smoking a pleasurable and addictive experience. This led to another warning from the surgeon general in 1988, which put addiction to nicotine on the same level as cocaine and heroin.

The danger in smoking comes from the chemical substances released either as a gas or as a particulate. Nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide and most especially carbon monoxide are gaseous emissions from cigarette smoke that threaten to poison the body.

Nicotine is one of several hazardous particulates emitted from smoking. These particulates damage the cilia – the little hairs lining the lungs that help transport mucus out of the lungs, and all pollutants accumulated. When the cilia malfunction, pollutants remain in the lungs and the likelihood of influenza and bronchitis, emphysema and other diseases increases.

The possibility that smokers die from cancer and heart disease is twice that of their non-smoking counterparts. Individuals who smoke also have lungs that become less efficient with age much faster than those who don’t. Smoking has been cited as the cause of over 400,000 deaths in the US every year.

Government agencies, scientists and health officials have also established that passive smoking, or second-hand smoke, also has ill effects. The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion has reported that over 4,000 chemicals are generated by second-hand smoke, with more than 50 of those believed to be cancer-causing agents.

In 1975, the Centers for Disease Control released a report citing such a danger, noting that toxic chemicals stay in the air and are inhaled by unsuspecting victims. Thus, the concern over smoking as a private choice by individuals expanded into a public-health issue.

Passive smoking was cited as a cancer-causing agent by the US Environmental Protection agency in 1993. For pregnant women, smoking raises the chances that their baby will be underweight or that they end up with a miscarriage. Children less than a year old are twice as likely to have lung infections if their mothers smoke compared to counterparts whose mothers do not practice the habit. Individuals with asthma, allergies or other respiratory ailments were also warned, as exposure can worsen their conditions.

Some smokers gradually quit or smoked less, while nonsmokers became the focus of more protection, as government worked on policies and legislation to curb the habit. As early as 1964, the US signed into law a requirement that health warnings must be integrated into all cigarette advertising and packaging. Policies were also implemented to designate schools, offices and other public places as smoke-free buildings.

In the 1990s, class action suits started to bombard state and federal courts, claiming that cigarette makers employed deceptive marketing tactics to keep consumers from knowing that nicotine was addictive and worked on levels of the particulate in cigarettes to keep smokers hooked on their product.

More recent suits against the industry charge manufacturers of also misleading consumers into thinking that “lights” and similar products were healthier alternatives to regular cigarettes. These more recent cases later led to the multi-billion dollar settlement between the US government and industry in the late 1990s.

These lawsuits and the consistency of health lobbyists and persuasive government programs have helped pull down US smoking rates on a consistent basis over the last four decades, with government figures showing per capita rates at 22.5% and experts forecasting the rates to continue declining in the future.

Stock markets are fascinating environments. But with unpredictable swings in prices, bull and bear phases, and stories about people making and losing millions overnight, they can also be intimidating to a beginning investor. Which are why stock trading clubs can be a good place for a novice investor to start out. Being in stock trading clubs is a way to manage your investment risk, and give you chance to study the market.

Stock trading clubs don`t remove risk. Whenever you invest your money in the stock market you risk losing that money. There are no guarantees. You have to be very aware of the fact that you could lose your investment overnight. If your financial goal is to save money safely so that you can retire, there may be other investment choices that may serve you better.

However, if you`re willing to take some risks, and give your money a chance to increase in far greater amounts than most other investment options, you have the perfect personality to be part of stock trading clubs.

People who are part of stock trading clubs are willing to take reasoned chances so that they can make a good profit, all the while enjoying the entire process of the stock market.	But they are also sane and rational when it comes to their money, wanting to retire with a nice sized nest egg. Investing in the stock market is one way to make large sums of money while having fun.

However, when you invest in the stock market you need to be prepared for there to be periods of time where you`re operating at a loss. During those periods when the market is slow you may think you`d be better off putting your money into a savings account. But if you`re patient, and ride out these patches, your profits are likely to be much higher than just accumulated interest.

When you`re part of stock trading clubs you`re combining your money with other investors who will patiently wait with you through the slow periods of the market for your investment profits to pick up again. This combined value of your investment helps you to realise greater profits. And the support of the group will enable you to wait out the downturns in the market.

Need more reasons to consider joining or starting stock trading clubs? Consider these:

+	You have the chance for much better results and profits than when you invest your money in annuity savings or into the bank. Your money will also be much more liquid, allowing you to take advantage of more profit making opportunities. You`ll have more control over where your money goes, what you do with it, and how much of it you want to invest, and where.
+	You have the ability to realize some dreams in your life that you may not be able to meet without the profit that you could make from investing. Playing the stock market can mean taking some of your dreams and making them a reality.
+	You`ll become much more knowledgeable about the investing and business environment. If you already have an interest in investing then being part of stock trading clubs is a great way to learn more and to share your interests with other people. You`ll be able to meet on a regular basis with people who are learning about the stock market right beside you.
+	When you invest in the stock market you`re taking your finances into your own control. You won`t be counting on the government for your future financial needs.

You need to weigh the risks and rewards of being in stock trading clubs with your own thoughts and feelings about money and savings. If you find that the rewards outweigh the risks, then you will find that stock trading clubs may be the perfect way for you to take charge of your finances, and work towards the profits the stock market brings to many committed investors.

By smoking, you are putting yourself at several health risks. Cigarettes contain several different toxins and chemicals that move throughout your body, leading to different types of problems. These vary from mild problems to severe health risks that may even lead to death. Following, are six of several health risks that are probable in relation to smoking.

1. Leukemia. This is a type of bone marrow disease that happens with an increase in white blood cells. Usually, this happens because the white blood cells are unable to be controlled. Leukemia is further exposed to be able to form in your body when you smoke. This is because of the chemical used in cigarettes known as benzene. This is a leukemogen that adds to the white blood cells being uncontrolled.

2. Weakened immune system. If you smoke, you are more likely to become sick more often, and can produce fatal diseases easier. Colds, the flu, pneumonia, bronchitis, etc. are some of the different symptoms that you will be more exposed to. The cigarettes chemicals move into the immune system and replace the toxins that are used to fight off diseases with the chemicals in the cigarettes. At first, this will cause you to become sick more often, but after a long period of smoking, it may lead to chronic illnesses that can weaken your system or cause death.

3. Osteoporosis. This is a symptom where your bones become weak, especially in the hip area. This begins because the smoke causes damage to nerve endings and tissue. This causes a lower level of blood to move into the bones, eventually not allowing the right nutrients to move into the bone areas. If you have an injury with a bone and smoke, it will take a longer time for it to heal as well. Eventually, this leads to lower bone density, which causes osteoporosis later on in your life.

4. Premature aging and wrinkles. The smoke and the tar that are in cigarettes take away the nutrients and oxygen that are needed for your skin to remain healthy. This includes weakening the collagen and fibers that are needed for healthy skin. These fibers are what give your skin strength and flexibility. It then replaces this with the radicals and chemicals that are in cigarette smoke. Smoke also causes the blood vessels in your skin to slow down. This takes away essential nutrients that the skin needs in order to remain healthy, such as vitamin A.

5. Asthma. Asthma is a lung disease that occurs because the lungs are unable to receive a sufficient amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide. This happens because the air flow to the lungs is blocked off. This then causes swelling of the air tubes, making it more difficult for air to move through. Asthma is often related to the symptoms of shortness of breath, a tight chest, coughing and wheezing. In smoking, asthma is often one of the results. This begins because the toxins and chemicals from smoking narrow the airways to your lungs and through the blood stream. Because of the toxins in the cigarette smoke, your lungs will respond by trying to create larger air sacs. This begins severe problems with breathing because the oxygen and carbon dioxide are blocked off from the normal air flow.

6. Altered Brain Chemistry. This includes things such as addiction and withdrawal symptoms, anxiety and other imbalances in your brain. This mainly occurs because of the nicotine contained in cigarettes. This nicotine is used as an addictive advice. It allows a smoker to believe that cigarettes allow them to feel good, relax, and calm their nerves. The nicotine moves into the brain and affects the natural system of chemicals that are used to calm painful situations. These chemicals are then consistently in need of being triggered by the nicotine. When this constant feeling of relaxation and feeling good is not noticeable, it causes a smoker to have withdrawal symptoms and addicting habits.

Smoking can cause several different types of symptoms, all leading to poor health. The toxins and chemicals that are used in smoking cause your body to move into a state of being constantly unhealthy, eventually leading to more severe problems. By smoking, you are affecting every part of your body’s health.
