Every kid that I know wants an ipod but should you buy one for yours? This is a huge question that is plaguing millions of parents just here in the US. The question is how much should you be spending on your child and if you buy him or her an ipod, won’t you be spoiling them? The answer is pretty obvious really. An ipod is rather a luxury item and if you buy it for your kid then yeah, you are spoiling them. Especially if you buy it just because they asked for it.

The best way to deal with the wants of children is to make them work for the things that they don’t need. First of all little kids have no need for something as fancy and expensive as an ipod anyway. So your child is probably 13 and up. At that age they need to be learning some responsibility and they need to learn that the good things in life are things that you work for. Put them to work to earn that ipod and the chances of them really appreciating it and taking care of it are going to skyrocket.

If you are planning to buy it for their birthday, the ipod might be a little extravagant. If it is one f the big birthdays like the 16th or the 19th or even the 21st then perhaps an ipod is an okay choice, otherwise you kid is gong to turn into a spoiled brat who thinks that the world should be handed to them on a platter. The fact of the matter is that the world does not work that way nor does it revolve around your son or daughter no matter how much they wish that it did.

When it comes to giving an ipod as a Christmas gift that is only really a good choice if that is all you are going to be giving your kid. And if you have a few kids you are looking at some serious bucks if you want to get one for everyone.

There are other cheaper options of course. Many of the mp3 players out there can be purchased for just over a hundred dollars and they work pretty good and they hold a good number of songs. They are not as snazzy as the ipod or as sophisticated but they will do for most kids. Especially if you are unsure of how well your child will be bale to take care of it. It is probably a good idea to start them out on a lesser model to see if they can handle the responsibility of an ipod. That is a lot of money, and while they are worth every penny, some kids just should not have them.

For example, don’t ever let your kid take their ipod to school. Hundreds of them get stolen every year from just about every single school. Kids joke about the cheapest place to get an ipod being at school. You do not want to see your hard earned money go that way.

If you have come to the conclusion that you want to play guitar the next step will be to choose a guitar to buy. There is a variety of instruments out there at different prices. Let’s look at your choices.

What types of guitars will you find in a guitar shop?

1. The classical guitar. The classical guitar or Spanish guitar has nylon strings which produce a soft and mellow sound suitable for classical guitar music and for accompanying soft songs with finger playing.

Personally I have grown up with the Spanish guitar in my home as my father was a guitar teacher and we had a lot of guitars in our home all of them with nylon strings.

I have played a lot of styles with Spanish guitars like blues and rock music. Yes, it is possible to bend the nylon strings on a classical guitar when you play blues if you get used to it!

2. Steel-strung flat-top guitars. The steel-strung guitar is very good for strumming with a plectrum and for playing solos.

Nowadays I play steel-strung guitars a lot both with right hand fingers and with a pick. I like the crisp sound from the steel-strings. The drawbacks with this types of guitars are that they can be hard to play if the strings have too high action.

3. Electic guitars. An electric guitar has electromagnetic pickups transforming the vibrations from the strings into currents that in an guitar amplifier becomes sounds.

In this type of guitar the direct sound from the guitar is not important which makes it possible to have light gauge strings that are easy to bend. This makes it easier to play blues licks for example.

I usually play on an American Stratocaster because I like the crisp, clean sound and I can play different types of music on it. There are a lot of different types of electric guitars to choose from.

Nowadays you can find inexpensive electric guitars of good quality for example Ibanez or Yamaha guitars that are easy to play. I have a rather inexpensive Ibanez guitar that is very easy to play.

If you are a beginner wanting to start to play guitar my advice would be that you ask an accomplished guitar player to help you choose the right guitar for you. Even two guitars of the same model can differ in playability and tone.

I would also suggest that you buy your guitar in a music shop with experienced musicians and guitarists that can help you find out the best guitar for you.

I would also suggest that you buy an electronic guitar tuner to help you to always have your guitar well tuned. There is no guitar that is nice to play if it is out of tune.

Peter Edvinsson is a musician, composer and music teacher. Visit his site Capotasto Music and download your free sheet music and learn to play guitar resources at capotastomusicdotcom

Even though new car sales are down, figures from the automotive industry tell us that used cars sales are up dramatically with three times as many people buying used over new.

There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is the rising cost of new cars which have become too expensive for many people.

If you can cool off the desire to have a brand new car and wait a couple of years you can save a ton of money. The biggest depreciation in vehicles is during the first two years. You can drive a two year old BMW for the price of a new Toyota. All you have to do is be a little more vigilant and make sure that the pre-owned vehicle has all the safety features that you need and want. Most vehicles over the last few years have been pretty aggressive in adding safety features.

You definitely want to have the basics like dual airbags and anti-lock brakes not only because of safety but also due to the fact that it will save you on your car insurance. Some vehicles even have side and rear airbags.
You can find a good quality two year old used vehicle with less than 35,000 miles that will look like a brand new one and have way more features than you could afford in a brand new car. Remember my BMW vs. Toyota example?

When buying a used car pay close attention to the wear and tear of the interior. I have found from experience that people who take good care of the interior of their car as well as keeping the exterior protected also take good care of the vehicle mechanically. If you run across a vehicle with torn seats, stained carpets and the like, I suggest you pass on it.

Always take a good look at the tire tread wear. You are not only looking for worn tires but also uneven tread wear which can indicate an alignment problem. When you road test the vehicle take your hands off the wheel for a second and see if the vehicle drifts. Pop the trunk and make sure that there is a spare and that it is in good condition as well.

Watch out for serious damage and paint work. It is easy to spot with a close eye. If body panels don’t line up properly there is a good chance it has had parts replaced. In addition to having a mechanic look the vehicle over mechanically and checking the fluids, lights, belts, charging system, and AC you can also have them put it on a lift and check the underneath of the vehicle for any frame damage repair.

One of the most important considerations to make before buying a vehicle is its safety features. Safety has become more important to everyone in recent years so let’s take a look at what is needed.

One of the best indicators of overall safety is the government crash test rating. All new vehicles will have these ratings and this is a good place to begin. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA uses two methods of crash testing for determining the safety of the vehicle, full frontal impact and side impact. A five star scale is used, the higher the number of stars the safer the vehicle is, the lower the number of stars the more dangerous the vehicle. You can find these grades at safercars.gov.

Another good source is the The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group which conducts crash tests as well. The thing I like about their frontal crash testing is that they use a more realistic offset testing method. Instead of crashing head on the vehicle is run into a deformable barrier meant to simulate another vehicle at 40 M.P.H. and the barrier is only covering the portion of the vehicle in front of the driver. Very rarely is a vehicle involved in a direct head on collision, it is usually offset like this and this usually results in worse damage due to torque and structural weakness. The scores in this test are Good, Acceptable, Marginal, or Poor.

You will also want to check into what type of air bag system the vehicle has. All new vehicles are mandated by law to have dual front airbags but many manufacturers have began to offer side and rear airbags as well which is especially important in multi passenger vehicles like vans and SUVs. The side curtain airbags that drop down from the headliner offer head protection from the side and are recommended. Some vehicles now have weight sensors as well that disable the airbag if a person below a certain weight is sitting there. My Nissan Titan has this feature.

One should also consider the rollover rate of the vehicle as well. Vehicles with a higher profile are more likely to turn over. SUVs are up to three times more likely to roll over than passenger vehicles. The majority of all SUV fatalities have been due to rollover.

Antilock brakes have been around awhile and are a proven safety device, which is why insurance companies give you a discount if your vehicle has them It is highly recommended that you not buy a vehicle without them. ABS prevents the wheels from locking up during a hard stop, something that can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle. ABS almost always provides shorter stops, but, even more importantly, the system helps keep the vehicle straight and allows the driver to maneuver during a panic stop.

When considering child safety you should look for the new technology called LATCH which stands for Lower Anchors And Tethers For Children. This universal system was designed to make it easier and safer to attach car seats due to the fact that many car seats are incompatible with the vehicle’s safety belts. You should also be sure that if the vehicle has power windows and door locks that it also has disabling locks that you can control to keep children from accidentally opening doors and windows.

These are just a few on the main safety features to look for. Consumer Reports is another good source for comprehensive safety reports.

Reading a book has long been a source of relaxation. However, in this modern age of computers, the internet, DVD movies, and MP3 players the simple act of reading a book has taken a backseat. People want something more interactive than just pages to turn. Kids are certainly more interested in playing their latest games console game. We seem to be turning away from the joy of reading a good book, but there is an answer. Audio books have been around a long time, but are relatively unknown to most people. There is a misconception that audio books are designed for people with eyesight problems. This is one of their uses, of course, but it is far from the full story.

Audio books are available on either cassette tape or CD. The beauty is that the whole story is narrated, often by well-known actors and actresses. It is like having your own private play. The variety of audio books is immense, and there is bound to be one that suits your tastes. The real bonus of listening to an audio book is that you can play it wherever you want to. I enjoy having an audio book in the car on long journeys. The length of the story is always given on the cover of the box so I can pick one that will finish in time for my journey, so I don’t miss the ending!

It isn’t simply stories that are available as audio books, but language lessons too. Imagine learning to speak a number of key Japanese phrases whilst you do the ironing, or mastering basic French whilst doing the vacuuming?! The possibilities are endless with the number of portable media players that are available now. You can have the enjoyment of your favourite novel, short story, or language lesson whilst still carrying out your daily chores. Audio books are available from most major bookstores, as well as over the internet. There are books for people of all ages, including kids, and include modern novels as well as the classics. If you are a member of a local library, you will also find audio books to hire, for a nominal fee, so you can try it and decide if you really want to buy one.
