Ever stop to consider what keeps everything from airplane walls to computer cases held together correctly? Without a reliable industrial fastener few things would function as they should. From nuts and bolts to screws and rivets, these fasteners are the unsung heroes of the technological, mechanical and even the home and commercial construction worlds.

Industrial fasteners are considered so important for keeping it all together, in fact, the industry itself is taken pretty seriously. It even has its own professional organization where manufacturers of all types of fasteners come together to share ideas, improve on products and more.

That’s right, there’s a professional organization that helps the fastener industry advance itself, its technologies and its ideas. The Industrial Fasteners Institute serves an industry that pulls in billions of dollars each year in sales. Considering the incredible demands placed on fasteners, the need for professional representation and idea sharing shouldn’t be surprising. Think a regular bolt could stand up to the intense heat of a space shuttle launch?

If you doubt the importance of the fastener industry consider that in the United States alone the industry is estimated to employ more than 40,000 people in about 350 different companies. The industry reports more than 200 billion different fasteners are used in the U.S. each year. This equates to big business. Big in the sense of a multi-billion dollar industry, in fact. That’s a lot of nuts and bolts!

But what exactly are fasteners and why are they considered so important. In the construction trade (including mechanical and technological) fasteners can include everything from nuts, bolts, screws, rivets and even specially designed items that are meant to hold things together. They can be made of steel, brass, plastic and more. They can be treated and designed to withstand heat, cold or unusual circumstances, too.

When it comes to constructing things that are meant to last, the fasteners are key. That’s what makes the industry so important. Just to make its domestic automobiles alone, the U.S. auto industry relies on an estimated 26 billion different fasteners each year.

Fasteners themselves can be a lot more complex than those found in a regular hardware store aisle, too. Specialty fasteners have been created for such industries as aerospace, automotive, nautical, chemical and more. Requirements on these items can be stringent, too. For example, some fasteners must be able to handle extreme heat, massive pressure, extreme cold or such considerations as an acidic environment or more.

Relied upon for keeping things together, the fastener is often the most overlooked item in a job, but it’s one of the most important. Without a reliable rivet, for example, sheet metal on heavy equipment wouldn’t hold. Without a good screw, a table might fall apart. If there were no fasteners, how would a plane stay together?

The industrial fastener isn’t the most glamorous of parts when it comes to airplanes, spacecraft and automobiles. And fasteners certainly aren’t thought about by the average homeowner when the drywall’s up and the walls are painted, but without them nothing would work correctly.

A glass shower door can take a bathroom design that’s plain and ordinary and make it incredible. Functional, yet chic the glass doors of today offer a lot of more options than designs from the past, too.

It’s true that for some, the bathroom is simply a room to take care of business. It can be plain, basic and boring as long as it’s functional. Glass doors can work here, too. By going with one of simplistic designs, the care is easy, the functionality is present and there’s no shower curtain to wash and/or replace.

Others, however, see the bathroom as an escape. It’s a place to soak in a warm tub or take in a hot shower. It should be relaxing, eye appealing and a pleasure to retreat to. For these people, a bathroom design can be as important as the living or dining rooms. Aesthetically pleasing, clean and beautiful are musts.

Here’s where glass doors can make a real difference. Depending on bathroom size and design, shower doors can be simply functional, yet beautiful or they can make a statement in a room.

Large bathrooms, for example, often have a separate showering area along with a standalone tub. Showers can be enclosed entirely in a frameless glass structure that speaks to style with unusual lines and visually pleasing designs. Elaborate and beautiful, these structures add an architectural appeal to a bathroom. Whether going for basic glass or intricately designed glass, too, can make a real difference. The choices here are almost endless as good glassmakers can even create a motif in the pieces. If what’s wanted isn’t available in a standard door, a custom made one can fill the need.

Smaller bathrooms can still benefit from a glass door. The sliding types that tend to go into shower/tub combinations can still be beautiful. Think beyond the basic frosted or bumped glass sheeting to pieces of glass with designs or colors and the idea starts to become clearer. Here, too, custom pieces can be designed or special styles ordered.

Whether going basic and frosted or elaborate and frameless, the choice of glass for the bathroom is important, too. It should be rated for safety no matter the design chosen. Glass in the bath should break like a windshield on car in tons of little pieces rather than sharp shards.

Once glass has been chosen and installed, caring for it might take a special touch. Depending on the type and style you’ve chosen, the care may be slightly different. It’s a good idea to talk with the installer or follow manufacturer instructions for care. No matter the case though, caring for glass can be easy if regular maintenance is part of a routine.

Wipe down the glass after each use and be certain to remove any soap or conditioner residue that might be stuck on it. Don’t use harsh abrasives. Regular wiping will help cut down on water stains or mineral build up, which makes overall care that much easier.

A glass shower door can turn an ordinary bathroom into an extraordinary one. They can also lend a utilitarian sense to a regular bathroom, serving basic needs better than curtains.

Almost every female celebrity has had her name associated with a certain diet at one point or another. However no matter how much you trust and admire a celebrity they don’t always recommend good dietary advice.

Remember Oprah Winfrey pushing the Cabbage Soup Diet about a decade or so on her television. This diet alternated eating one certain food all day with drinking a high sodium broth made from cabbages, V8 juices and Lipton’s onion soup mix. One day you would eat nothing bananas, another day nothing but soup and another day nothing but meat. The problem with this diet is that it was basically a calorie deprivation diet that many people found hard to stick to. It was also a diet that was extremely high in sodium. Oprah later retracted her faith in this diet, but this is a good example of “When Good Celebrities Diet Wrong.”

Unfortunately, many celebrities do not really realize the impact that their blithe comments have on their faithful followers, especially when it comes to diets. Here are some examples of celebrity diets that may or may not work depending on the condition of your health, your budget and whether or not you have a private chef.

Drew Barrymore – Drew Barrymore advocates engaging in at least one fun but strenuous activity a day such as crazy golf, swimming or playing a team sport. This is combined with three meals a day, staying away from cola and eating sugar free Jell-O. She also stays away from eating meat as much as she can. This is a very sensible plan but it will not create a stick thin figure. Drew Barrymore is one of those curvy celebrities who is not caving in to Hollywood peer pressure to be less than curvaceous.

Heidi Klum – Supermodel Heidi Klum stunned the world by losing thirty pounds one month after giving birth to her baby. She did this by embarking on a calorie restricted diet that allowed her no more than 1700 calories a day which most doctors would consider to be too low for a nursing mom. However it might be just right for an average adult who is not nursing!

Gwyneth Paltrow – Actress Gwyneth Paltrow is a follower of the Zen Macrobiotic diet that bans dairy, caffeine, alcohol, meat, fish and eggs. Whatever you eat that is left over must be organic. This can be an expensive or inexpensive diet depending on whether or not you go for the organic option. Also most foods on this diet are served raw which means buying plenty of fresh produce, which can get expensive. It is very difficult to cook anything tasty on this kind of diet. As it is mostly vegetables, nuts and seeds it can lead to severe calorie restriction as well. Staying on this diet for more than a week is very challenging for most people who usually give into cravings. Furthermore the lack of proteins, vitamin B12 and fats in this diet can lead to mental and emotional disturbances.

Claudia Schiffer – Supermodel Claudia Shiffer sticks to eating three meals a day, but they must be totally organic. This is probably the best of the celebrity diets around as it is built on the common sense prescription of “three square meals a day.” However eating organic can double the expense of your grocery bill which is not economical for many.

Rene Zellweiger – Rene Zelleweiger keeps her figure by sticking to the Zone Diet. This diet which involves food combining is not that practical for ordering out in restaurants. Furthermore strategizing your meals takes a lot of planning, grocery shopping and making special meals. This is just not that practical for today’s busy women. There are many companies that specialize in delivering Zone prepared meals directly to your door in large urban centers and you can find this information in your local phone book or you can check on the internet.

Unfortunately most weight loss diets are actually fad diets. All to often diets that describe themselves as being new or revolutionary are actually diets that are twenty or thirty years old come back for a second or third wave of popularity. Good examples are the Zen diet, which is simply a revival of hippie macrobiotic eating theories from the mid 1960s, the Zone diet which is based on food combining principles that have been around since the turn of the 19th century and the Atkins diet which was initially pioneered in the 1970s and had a Gloria Swanson type comeback not too long ago.

The best way to identify a fad diet is to determine if it is based on any of the following principles:

It is based on the way Neanderthals eat
It is based on foods from the bible
It is based on your blood type
It is based on eating mostly protein and no carbs
It is based on eating mostly carbs and no protein
It is based on eating no fat
It is based on eating fatty foods
It recommends the eating of negative calorie foods
It recommends eating only one fruit such as grapefruit
It recommends drinking more than three cups of coffee a day
It claims that you can eat whatever you want

Perhaps the most popular of these diets are the High protein/low carb diet that are based on the idea that carbohydrates are bad, that many people are “allergic” to them or are insulin-resistant, and therefore gain weight when they eat them. This includes the South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet and the Atkins diet. These types of diets induce ketosis to accelerate weight loss. Ketosis is an abnormal body process that occurs during starvation due to lack of carbohydrate. Ketosis causes fatigue, constipation, nausea, and vomiting, none of which are part of a healthy lifestyle. Long-term side effects of ketosis are documented to include heart disease, bone loss, and kidney damage

The truth behind weight gain in this society is that people are eating more total calories and getting less physical activity. Your body simply doesn’t distinguish between types of calories when it comes to weight gain or loss only the number of them.

Crash diets dehydrate you, low calorie diets put your body into starvation mode so you plateau so you can’t lose one more pound and high protein diets stress your kidneys and clog your arteries.

The truth is that you do need protein and fat in the diet, both serve important metabolic and physiological roles in the body. Fad and crash diets, such as the ones described above are not only unhealthy but they are also cause rebound weight gain. Also most diets, even though diet gurus write them cause an initial weight loss but the ultimate result is that you gain all of the weight back the minute you go off the plan. If you don’t gain it back within a couple of diets, you are likely to gain it all back plus a bit more within a year.

Snoring isn’t generally a problem for the person making the noise unless a medical condition is causing the issue or sleep is actually lost as a result. But for those who live with a person who snores, sleep can be impossible to obtain. If snoring is a major issue for the person who does it or the person or people who live with it, it’s time to start exploring snoring treatment options. These options can range from simple sleep position adjustments to major surgery.

Before panicking that surgery is the only option, it’s a good idea to examine the situation. Ask yourself how long the condition has been present? Is it due to an ongoing cold or other minor illness that has impaired ability to breath at night? If snoring has been a long-term problem, outside help might be in order. If it’s due to a cold or it’s a relatively new condition, over the counter treatments or even a change of sleep positions can help.

If snoring is a fairly new nighttime prospect, it may be that you’ve changed your sleeping position lately. Sleeping on the back tends to promote snoring, so try your side or stomach. For pregnant women this may be impossible, but like all the other inconveniences of pregnancy, this too will pass.

Other primary causes of snoring include:

* Weight. If you’re overweight, even slightly, this can create issues with nighttime airflow. Losing as little as a few pounds might help lessen the snoring bouts.

* Stay away from alcohol at night. This has been shown to increase incidents of snoring.

* Stay away from sedatives and other drugs that cause drowsiness. They have been shown to relax throat muscles to the point they increase airway obstructions that can relate to snoring.

* Sinus infections, colds and so on. Temporary illnesses can increase a person’s propensity to snore. Generally the snoring will pass along with the illness.

If a cold or weight don’t seem to be the cause of snoring, more investigation may be required. There are a number of over the counter items such as nose strips, breathing masks and even saline nose spray that may help. But, if the cause is unclear and lost sleep is becoming a problem or interfering with the quality of life, a doctor’s visit is likely in order.

Medical treatments for snoring can be pretty basic or fairly complex. On the upside, generally more than 90 percent of those with a sleep apnea related condition can be treated without using an invasive technique. If surgery is called for to help fix the problem, it can be meant to address a number of different conditions. Some common issues that cause snoring include a need to remove or shrink soft tissue at the back of the throat, a need for the tonsils or adenoids to come out and even sinus or septum issues.

Snoring isn’t a real problem unless it interferes with sleep – yours or someone else’s. If this is the case, a solid snoring treatment may be the only option. There’s no need to go through life with inadequate sleep if help is available.
